HSLL Recap and HSLL/Northern Nevada Playoffs
Following a rough trip to California that saw the varsity team score eight goals to the opposing team's 25, the Grizzlies returned home to begin a long slate of league games. The Month of March was nice for the Grizzlies as they enjoyed four home games and two road games against local opponents. Each contest resulted in a Galena victory as the team began to hit their stride.

There and Back Again
The Galena Grizzlies began their 2014 campaign with a trip to
Northern California for the Redding Jamboree. After going 1-2 in that adventure
the team returned home for some practice and then some scrimmages vs. local HSLL
teams the first weekend of March. All of that was in preparation for the team’s
second trip to California to play two teams in the Petaluma area: Casa Grande
and Rancho Cotati. Galena had never faced either in these teams in the history
of the program.

Going to California…
The Galena Grizzlies opened up the 2014 season on the road
at the Redding Jamboree February 22-23. The first game on Saturday morning
pitted the Grizzlies against a talented team they had never seen before from the
Folsom/Sacramento area, Folsom United.

2013 Varsity Boy's Lacrosse Finishes 15-4
The Galena Grizzlies had a good year. Yes, it can be stated that simply. The team hit all the marks that a high school team playing in the Western/Pacific region of the U.S. could hope for. They travelled to three states for non-league games, won a league title, and saw five players named 1st Team All-HSLL. On top of all that, 17 quality seniors experienced success in the form of a 15-4 record in their last season in the black and gold.
The team started the 2013 campaign by venturing to California and Idaho. The first four games of the season were scheduled to see how the 2013 Grizzlies would measure up against regional opponents. The boys returned to the Truckee Meadows with a 2-2 record which included a loss to the eventual 2013 Idaho State Champions, Mountain View. That was a meaningful start as the non-league competition gave the Grizzlies a taste of what would be needed to repeat as league champions in the HSLL. As league play began, the focus was to play the best games possible regardless of the opponent or any previous results. The undefeated 2012 season and league championship was in the rear view mirror and the local teams had changed. New coaches, better players, all hungry to take a shot at Galena. For the most part, the Galena players raised their game in 2013 with exceptions being two very close games in the heart of the season versus McQueen and Reno, respectively. The Grizzlies weathered the regular season with a high powered offense that averaged just over 16 goals per game and a solid defense that only allowed an average of 5.5 goals per game.

Galena (HSLL) @ Woodcreek (CA NCLA-E) Results
Saturday, March 2nd 2013
For their first game of the season the Galena Boy’s Varsity team traveled to Grass Valley, CA to play a neutral site contest vs Woodcreek (CA NCLA-E). The game was played under sunny, warm conditions at Nevada Union HS. Prior to starting the game, Woodcreek (2-0) had defeated local HSLL opponent Spanish Springs 16-1, so the Grizzlies knew they were in for a good game.
Galena started the game slowly as Woodcreek scored 4 unanswered goals in the first quarter. Galena looked out of sorts in their first game of the season making mistakes that were being exploited by a disciplined Woodcreek team. After a cleansing talk between the 1st and 2nd quarter, Galena crawled back into the game with three goals in the second quarter to Woodcreek’s one to go into halftime down 3-5. From halftime on the Grizzlies played with more hustle and jam but the only goal came from Woodcreek as they added an extra goal to extend their lead to 3-6 after the 3rd quarter.
