Galena celebrates Coach Al Garner's 100th Game

Celebrating Coach Garner's 100th varsity game with Galena Lacrosse.

Coach Garner took over our program in 2012 where he posted a 12-0 record in the High Sierra Lacrosse League winning the Championships. In 2013 the Grizzlies would rattle off another undefeated season going 10-0 en route to their second HSLL title. The Grizzlies were on THIS home turf that night hosting the first ever lacrosse game in Grizzly Stadium under the lights. In 2014 and another championship under his belt, Coach Garner escorted his Varsity team to Las Vegas for the inaugural State Championships. The Grizzlies beat Green Valley 11-8 but lost 5-10 to Bishop Gorman, settling for second in the state.

Twelve seniors (most of them four-year players) presented Coach Garner with a frame that will include photos of tonights game.

First we would like to thank Shannon, Abigail, and Genevieve Garner for allowing fifty high school boys to steal their husband and father every lacrosse season. He's taken these boys to Idaho, to Petaluma, to Redding, to Oregon and to Las Vegas. Thank you ladies for enduring all of us and being a part of the Galena Lacrosse family!

Next, we'd like to thank all the assistant coaches that have helped mold the team we are today. Back from 2012 to present thank you Curt Wegener, Eric Peacock, Steve Bulera, Terry Schreker, Chris Mercurio, Tim Cleveland, Tim Wolfe, Steven Schuck, Travis Hopper, and most importantly Coach Alice.

Lastly, thank you Galena Varsity players for playing tough, hitting hard, facing off, fighting for ground balls, scoring goals, saving goals, sliding, as well as being tripped, pushed, slashed, and overall entertaining us critical and demanding parents all these years. It's been a joy watching you every Spring season.

Coach Garner is dedicated and determined
He teaches teamwork
He motivates and listens, and he builds character
He challenges and develops players, and he pushes them out of their comfort zone.

Tonight we honor Al Garner. THANK YOU COACH!!

Galena Lacrosse 2015 Season Preview

The 2015 lacrosse season is almost here and the Galena Program is looking to build off of its 2014 successes. Last season, the Galena girl's team went undefeated in league play (again), won the league title, and represented the HSLL at the inaugural State Championships. The Galena boy's team also won their third HSLL title in a row, however finished as the runner-up in the State Championship final. Both teams left the season on losses and have had plenty of time to reflect on the highs and lows of the 2014 season.

Following their third straight HSLL title, the Grizzlies travelled to Sisters, Oregon for the Sisters Annual Lacrosse Invitational (SALI). The team had closed the season with SALI in 2012 and 2013, but this year SALI provided games and additional time to improve before the inaugural state finals on Memorial Day weekend.

HSLL Recap and HSLL/Northern Nevada Playoffs

Following a rough trip to California that saw the varsity team score eight goals to the opposing team's 25, the Grizzlies returned home to begin a long slate of league games. The Month of March was nice for the Grizzlies as they enjoyed four home games and two road games against local opponents. Each contest resulted in a Galena victory as the team began to hit their stride.

There and Back Again

The Galena Grizzlies began their 2014 campaign with a trip to Northern California for the Redding Jamboree. After going 1-2 in that adventure the team returned home for some practice and then some scrimmages vs. local HSLL teams the first weekend of March. All of that was in preparation for the team’s second trip to California to play two teams in the Petaluma area: Casa Grande and Rancho Cotati. Galena had never faced either in these teams in the history of the program.

2013 Varsity Boy's Lacrosse Finishes 15-4

The Galena Grizzlies had a good year. Yes, it can be stated that simply. The team hit all the marks that a high school team playing in the Western/Pacific region of the U.S. could hope for. They travelled to three states for non-league games, won a league title, and saw five players named 1st Team All-HSLL. On top of all that, 17 quality seniors experienced success in the form of a 15-4 record in their last season in the black and gold.

The team started the 2013 campaign by venturing to California and Idaho. The first four games of the season were scheduled to see how the 2013 Grizzlies would measure up against regional opponents. The boys returned to the Truckee Meadows with a 2-2 record which included a loss to the eventual 2013 Idaho State Champions, Mountain View. That was a meaningful start as the non-league competition gave the Grizzlies a taste of what would be needed to repeat as league champions in the HSLL. As league play began, the focus was to play the best games possible regardless of the opponent or any previous results. The undefeated 2012 season and league championship was in the rear view mirror and the local teams had changed. New coaches, better players, all hungry to take a shot at Galena. For the most part, the Galena players raised their game in 2013 with exceptions being two very close games in the heart of the season versus McQueen and Reno, respectively. The Grizzlies weathered the regular season with a high powered offense that averaged just over 16 goals per game and a solid defense that only allowed an average of 5.5 goals per game.
