Going to California…

The Galena Grizzlies opened up the 2014 season on the road at the Redding Jamboree February 22-23. The first game on Saturday morning pitted the Grizzlies against a talented team they had never seen before from the Folsom/Sacramento area, Folsom United.

The Folsom team came out fast against the Grizzlies and pumped several goals in early. Galena answered back with a few, but could not overcome the gap that the Folsom team spread on them early. The final score was 4-11 in favor of Folsom, but could have been a lot more if it weren’t for stellar play from TJ Wright, freshman goalie for Galena.

The second game of the Redding Jamboree saw the Grizzlies play another first-time opponent in Elk Grove. Elk Grove also came of the gates fast and worked up a solid lead on the Grizzlies. In their second game of the season, the Grizzlies, slightly over-matched at midfield, managed to hang with Elk Grove, but could not answer back with more than two goals in the effort. Elk Grove went on to grab the win in a 2-7 contest.
The last game of the jamboree was played on Sunday morning vs. Pleasant Grove. The Redding air was cool and clear, and the Grizzlies had a fresh perspective after two tough games on the first day. Both teams were pretty evenly matched skill-wise, but the Grizzlies managed to win the ground ball and possession game. This lead to settled goal scoring opportunities and, ultimately, a few more goals in the back of the net.  The Grizzlies grabbed their first win of the season over Pleasant Grove 6-4.
The Galena JV team also travelled up to Redding for the Jamboree. For many of the players, it was their first time playing lacrosse with the Galena program. Though there were tough losses and some bumps and bruises, the JV team gained a lot experience in their three games. This was a great introduction to the game for them and served as an example of what the JV-level looks like in Northern California.

Go Grizzlies!
