2012 Grizzlies Go 12-0 and Win 1st HSLL Title!

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

The Galena Grizzlies secured the #1 seed in the 2012 HSLL playoffs by going 10-0 during the regular season. The Grizzlies met the #4 seeded McQueen Lancers in the semi-finals which were played at Galena HS under sunny and warm conditions. Galena came roaring out the gates against the Lancers dominating the ground ball game and capitalizing on feeds in front the McQueen goal. The varsity team was on the field for much of the game, but some of the younger Grizzly players got some time in the fourth quarter. Ultimately, Galena emerged victorious with a 12-2 win for the last game of the season at Galena HS.

The Reno (High Sierra) Huskies won their semi-final match-up on the same day as Galena and the two teams were slated to meet under the lights at Spanish Springs Stadium in Sparks, NV. Galena had taken the first two meetings during the regular season by a combined score of 28-16, but Reno was not going to lay down for the Grizzlies.

The game started off with some back and forth action, but only a few scoring chances developed for each team. Mike Grove (Sr. G) for the Grizzlies made an amazing off-hip save off the back of his left glove on a point blank shot to keep the game knotted at 0-0 early in the first quarter, while the Reno goalie was spared the body shots as the Galena offense struggled to put shots on goal.

In the middle of the first quarter, the Grizzlies settled down and the offense began putting some points on the board. Gavin Sarratea (Sr. M) scored two goals off of dodges from the top of the box while Mike Wegener (Jr. A) buried a few goals on dodges in tight around the crease. Galena went on to take control of the game in the first half going up by a score of 6-0 at one point. Though they were down, the Reno Huskies did not give up and rallied back to win the third quarter closing the gap by beating the Grizzlies defense with sharp inside passes. Reno pulled back within a few goals late in the third quarter, but could not match the goals that Galena would pump in during the fourth. The weather had become cool and windy on the early May night, but the Galena team and their seniors applied heat and steady pressure in all phases of the game to keep Reno off the scoreboard. When the final buzzer sounded, the Grizzlies had won their first HSLL title by defeating the Huskies 10-7. It was the first undefeated HSLL season for the Grizzlies and a great ending to the year for the seniors. Go Grizzlies!
